June 2025 War Comparison

June 2025: Iran fired 574 BMs. 322 engaged, 273 intercepted (85%). 100-250 US interceptors used = 20-50% of Pentagon THAAD inventory.

Gulf allies interceptor stocks critically low — THAAD supply reaching limits.

SM-3 missiles: 80 used in June = ~20% of US stock at end of 2024 (CSIS). Production: ~24/year.

Trump (Mar 4): "We have unlimited of the middle- and upper middle- ammunition. Defense companies under emergency orders."

Sen. Blumenthal: "Potential desperate and disastrous shortage of THAAD and Patriot systems."

IDF doctrine: "Target the archer, not the arrows." — Race to destroy launchers before interceptors run out.

Direct clashes: Hezbollah engaging IDF in direct confrontations. IDF security zone extends to Litani. Beirut-Tyre highway severed. IDF army chief warns of 'verge of collapse.'

Political Dynamics & Regional Spillover

LEBANESE GOVERNMENT

Split

PM Salam: Condemned Hezbollah rockets as "irresponsible acts outside the authority of the Lebanese state." Emergency cabinet meeting banned ALL Hezbollah military activity.

Weapons demand: Government ordered Hezbollah to surrender weapons and restrict to political activities only. Justice Minister requested arrest of those launching rockets.

Hezbollah response: Called government "impotent" and said ban is unjustified given "clear weakness." Accused Israel of 15 months of ceasefire violations.

Public opinion: Hezbollah losing support even among Shi'a bloc. Lebanese Army arrested Hezbollah members near Sidon. Voices against the group "growing louder."

REGIONAL SPILLOVER

Expanding

Syria incursion: Israel entered southern Syria, shelled area between Jamla and Saisoun (Daraa). 4 civilians arrested. Demands Syria block Iraqi militias heading to Golan.

Iraq front: Iraqi Kurdish armed groups preparing to enter Iran from Kurdistan Region. Iraqi Shi'a militias claiming 28+ attacks on US targets. Camp Victoria (Baghdad) hit by rockets.

Kurdish front: Iran struck Kurdistan Freedom Party HQ in Iraq. 1 guard killed. Iraq PM ordered border security tightened to prevent cross-border infiltration.

IDF warning: "Any Iranian regime representative still in Lebanon — leave within 24 hours or be targeted." No safe place after deadline.

France: Condemned Hezbollah attacks as "irresponsible." Expressed solidarity with Israeli civilians AND Lebanese people suffering due to Hezbollah's decision.

Sulphuric Acid — The Hidden Chokepoint

SUPPLY CHAIN

Severed
ELECTRIFICATION AT RISK

What: Sulphuric acid is produced from sulphur — the critical reagent used to leach copper from copper ore (hydrometallurgical extraction). No sulphuric acid = no refined copper.

Hormuz dependency: ~50% of global seaborne sulphur trade transits the Strait of Hormuz. Iran alone contributes ~30% of world sulphur exports. The closure has severed the primary supply artery.

China exposure: China imports >50% of its sulphur, with over half sourced from the Middle East Gulf. China also operates ~60% of global copper smelting capacity. Double vulnerability.

China port stocks: ~1.8M tonnes — enough for only 1.2–1.5 months at spring consumption rates. If blockade persists through March–April, stockouts are inevitable.

DOWNSTREAM IMPACT

Cascading
BATTERY METALS → EVs → GRID

Copper: Central African copperbelt imports ~2M t/yr of sulphur for oxide copper leaching. Acid costs approaching $300/t dap Kolwezi (DRC) — well above normal benchmarks.

Cobalt: DRC = 70% of global mined cobalt. Same sulphuric acid dependency. EV battery cathode supply chain at risk.

Nickel: Indonesia's HPAL plants depend on imported sulphur — 74% (3.95M t) from Middle East in 2025. Shipment delays already reported.

Lithium: Spodumene-to-lithium conversion requires sulphuric acid. Chinese refiners already squeezed by rising input costs — weak link in lithium supply chain.

STRATEGIC PICTURE

Structural
WHO CONTROLS THE GREEN TRANSITION?

The chain: Middle East sulphur → Sulphuric acid → Copper/Cobalt/Nickel/Lithium → Batteries → EVs → Power grid. One chokepoint threatens the entire electrification stack.

China dominance: China owns ~60% of copper smelting, ~80% of lithium refining, ~65% of cobalt refining. A prolonged Hormuz closure hits China's industrial base hardest — but the world depends on that base.

Copper forecast: J.P. Morgan projects copper to $12,500/mt in Q2 2026 on pre-existing supply deficit of ~330 kmt. War-driven sulphur disruption adds extreme upside risk.

Alba (Bahrain): Aluminium Bahrain declared force majeure on shipments due to Hormuz disruption. Pattern likely to spread across metals producers.
